Two Years of Shocking Revelations Unveiled in Post Office Horizon IT Scandal Inquiry

The Post Office scandal has been the focus of a statutory public inquiry for the past two years, but has only recently gained significant public attention thanks to the airing of ITV’s Mr Bates vs the Post Office drama. Computer Weekly has been closely following the inquiry since it began in 2022. The inquiry, which now has the power to call witnesses and is chaired by retired judge Wyn Williams, has already uncovered shocking evidence of wrongdoing by the Post Office. The first phase of the inquiry heard witness statements from victims of the scandal, followed by investigations into the Horizon IT system, its operation, and the practices of lawyers and investigators involved in prosecutions. Computer Weekly first exposed the scandal in 2009 and has been tracking it ever since. The inquiry’s fourth phase, which concluded in July 2023, highlighted the Post Office’s legal practices when prosecuting subpostmasters. The fifth and sixth phases, set to begin in April 2024, are expected to reveal even more revelations, including testimonies from high-profile individuals involved in the scandal.
