Python Dominates in TIOBE Programming Language Index News for August 2024

In August, Python solidified its position as the number one programming language in the TIOBE Programming Language Community Index. Python’s percentage increased from 16.12% in July to 18.04% in August, marking a significant jump. This follows a year-over-year increase of 4.71%. The top 10 list saw some movement towards the bottom, with SQL continuing its upward trend since May.
According to the TIOBE Programming Community Index, Python is approaching a record lead ahead of C++. TIOBE Software CEO Paul Jansen stated that Python holds an 8% lead over C++, which is almost a record. Python has been on an upward trajectory since 2014, with a minor dip last year. Jansen mentioned that it is likely Python will become the most popular programming language.
While languages like Rust and Kotlin are quickly rising in the TIOBE index, it will take time before they pose a real threat to Python’s dominance. Rust currently ranks at number 14, while Kotlin has risen to number 18 from 27 in August 2023.
C++ and C maintained their positions in second and third place respectively in August. SQL moved up to seventh place, while Fortran dropped to tenth place from ninth. Python’s popularity is attributed to its gentle learning curve and the increasing demand for new programmers.
