Cornwall Charity Introduces Diverse Career Initiative

Tech Cornwall launched a careers program aimed at bringing people from diverse backgrounds into technology. It doesn’t matter where you stand in your current job or employment situation; everyone is welcome. And yes, it’s free, thanks to the support from the Shared Prosperity Fund.

The initiative, Tech Cornwall Career Pathways, prioritizes diversity, equity, and inclusion, along with boosting social mobility. The program is flexible. Whether you have a job, caregiving duties, or health issues, you can learn at your own pace and on your own schedule.

Toni Coppen, the program lead, emphasized its flexibility. “This program fits around your life, whether you’re working or have other commitments. It’s self-directed. You can explore various resources whenever you want through our Tech Learning Community. Plus, we organize practical workshops and online coaching sessions in the evenings to ensure everyone can participate.”

Many people from underrepresented groups face barriers to entering tech. Research from the Tech Talent Charter found that 40% of women consider their caregiving responsibilities when deciding whether to stay in their roles.

This program shifts the focus from coding skills to a candidate’s attitude toward learning. Toni pointed out that some participants come in without ever having seen a line of code, but they have valuable skills that can translate into tech roles once they acquire the technical know-how.

Toni also mentioned a common issue with many programs: they tend to filter out candidates too early in the process. “Sure, you need some talent, motivation, and natural ability to succeed, but you don’t have to be an expert already. We’re here to help you become one.”

The tech sector struggles with diversity and skills shortages. Businesses often find it hard to fill IT roles because their hiring criteria can be too narrow. Tech Cornwall believes this program can help local businesses open their doors to eager talent that needs a bit of training but shows a strong desire to learn and grow in their careers.

Participants engage in a blend of online training and hands-on skills development for jobs in web development, data science, AI, and more. Tech Cornwall has called on over 100 tech companies in Cornwall’s tech cluster to partner with them, potentially hiring graduates from the program.

The first cohort includes a balanced mix of men and women, from their twenties to over sixty, each bringing a range of experiences and backgrounds.

This isn’t Tech Cornwall’s first endeavor to promote diversity in local tech hiring. They’ve organized “tech jam” events and the Cornwall Festival of Tech to connect aspiring talent with industry professionals who can help them break into tech careers.
