Founded in 2019 as part of the United Arab Emirates’ national strategy for artificial intelligence, Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) is located in Masdar City in Abu Dhabi. While it may not be recognized as the world’s first graduate research university dedicated to AI, it is making progress as a young institution. With 276 students from over 40 countries, MBZUAI offers executive education and graduate degrees in various AI programs. The university has also established itself as a thought leader in the region. MBZUAI has attracted renowned researchers and built a state-of-the-art supercomputing center, which will support research and collaboration with industry players and startups. President Eric Xing, an accomplished expert in AI, leads MBZUAI’s research program and is actively involved in forging partnerships with organizations like IBM and Carnegie Mellon University. The university is also collaborating on projects in language modeling and life sciences, areas that have practical applications in society. Xing believes that AI, particularly foundation models, will play a crucial role in domains such as drug design, climate modeling, and energy control. The UAE, in embracing AI early on, aims to diversify its economy and become a leading competitor in the global AI landscape. MBZUAI serves as a think-tank, assisting government officials and stakeholders in understanding the implications and potential of AI technology.
